With the holiday fast approaching, here’s that old video again for those in those in our area…

Update: errm, according to late-breaking news on June 28, make that the “Ad for the July 11 Concert”…

There were rumors in the parking lot that Bret Michaels had shown up in a limo and would be guesting onstage. Amazingly, Michaels actually did show up on stage, singing with Jimmy on “Margaritaville”. I tried to record the whole thing, but the best my iPhone 3G can shoot is at best about 6 frames a second. (Figures the brand new iPhone 4 can shoot in 720p, but wouldn’t be released till two days later). Luckily the “Margarillas” shot the song right from the stage and shared the video on Facebook and YouTube. The funny thing is the camera is facing our section of the crowd. If you look close enough (and you know whom to look for), you can spot me, Mike, and Mike’s sister and brother-in-law.
Update [6/30]: another video of this event has been posted, this time on Margaritaville.com’s Coconut Television page (found via Buffett World). Don’t mind that “Bret Michaels sings Margaritaville at Alpine Valley” caption; it’s still Pine Knob on Tuesday. (Also available in the Margaritaville and Bret Michaels channels on YouTube channel, but in a 4×3 square. Resized to a proper 16×9 here…)
Back home from another great Buffett show at Pine Knob. Here are a few images from our amazing Row A seats. I shot some video too but the quality is quite poor (my phone is two years old); I at least used it for the freeze-frames of Bret Michaels surprise duet on “Margaritaville” and when Jimmy came by us at the end of the show. The pictures have been upload to our Photo Gallery, or you can also check them out at my Flickr page or my Mobile Me gallery.

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, June 16 2010 (9:30 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“The boys talk about the recent Detroit River Parrothead Cruise, discuss the latest Buffett headlines, go through the Cincinnati and Houston shows, and look forward to the upcoming Pine Knob concert (less than a week!). (Special guest: Jennifer. Cameo by Scott.)”
00:04 – we spent a lot of time talking about TV shows — including Firefly, which I’d finally talked Mike into getting on Blu-ray
01:49 – Pier 500 in Wyandotte | Diamond Jack’s River Tours | Jim Auquier on Facebook
05:49 – all the Buffett and Buffett-related songs are in our cruise video, with the exception of “Brown Eyed Girl” (since it really was more like Van Morrison’s arrangement) and “Come Monday” (since I was running out of videotape). I managed to get audio of the final song, “Lovely Cruise”, on my cellphone, but it was so over-modulated I only used a snippet in the video.
06:51 – Chelsea‘s and Willow Tree
07:08 – the cruise pictures in our Photo Gallery
08:28 – Pier 500’s tickets provided by Central Distributors
09:46 – Maxine Nightingale’s “Right Back Where We Started From”
10:19 – Sunday, July 4 1993. I took someone’s advice and, day of the concert, waited to get tickets at Pine Knob’s will call window.
14:17 – Silly Bandz — they’re spelled with a Z! How silly!
15:24 – a girl was handing out Landshark leis and lanyards after the cruise
17:26 – Jimmy visits the Lawrenceville School, from Buffett World
17:58 – the Hot in Cleveland premiere had aired on TV Land while we were recording and I’d had trouble remembering Jane Leeves’s character’s name on Frasier
18:01 – Jimmy sells his Palm Beach estate: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
Between our recording and the publication of the episode, it was revealed the buyer is Jimmy’s next-door neighbor Jon Stryker, from Buffett News
18:38 – Jimmy tours Florida beach with Gov Charlie Crist: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention | AP article
19:53 – “Buffett Visits USM’s Gulf Coast Research Lab“, from Buffett World
20:20 – Fruitcakes on the Radio winner Dave McCormick, from Radio M’ville’s Facebook page
21:13 – “Margaritaville Casino in Atlantic City Back on Track“, from Buffett World
21:29 – Briggs & Stratton generator story: before and after, from Buffett World
21:56 – Boston Globe interview: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
22:37 – a reference to Episode 56
22:43 – Buffett News’s WZLX story. Interview recorded Friday, June 11, and complete MP3 available here.
25:24 – Jimmy attends NBA Finals game: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
25:36 – Garden & Gun‘s Buffett biodiesel story: Buffett News mention | Buffett World mention
26:24 – sorry, Mansfield, I got the date wrong. The Saturday show is of course on June 19.
27:26 – Margaritaville Footwear (and link for Famous Footwear). Update: a day after posting these notes, Mike texted us to announce his shoes had arrived, well in time for Tuesday’s concert.
42:38 – here’s a behind-the-scenes secret: the sped-up female rant is really a YouTube video of Dixie Carter in Designing Women
47:00 – just because of that comment, I bought WAOTNC.com
47:04 – yes, Scott was there, but he left before we started recording. (That’s the Tigers playing the Washington Nationals in the background. The Tigers won, 8-3.)
Just back from tonight’s Parrot Head cruise, up and down the Detroit River. This was what we were talking about back in Episode 127, the cruise where Mike’s brother Jim (the singer of our theme song) was going to perform acoustic versions of Buffett songs. I shot video, recorded some audio, and also shot some photos with my cellphone. Some notable highlights included a pole dance to “Changes in Latitudes” — which I’m pretty sure has to be a world-record, history-making first — and that the drawing for the free concert tickets was won by our very own Schmoe!
After Mike’s news from two weeks ago, it’s almost getting to the point where we have more tickets than we know what to do with! …Not really, but close. And not that we’re complaining.
Hopefully I’ll be uploading the video soon, but until then here are the cellphone pictures, which I uploaded to our Photo Gallery.
Update: here’s the video .
Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, June 2 2010 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Fleeing from the bikers, we’re back at Zodiac. Mike has some big news, Schmoe gets some big news, and we finish our look at the Big Top tour’s first leg and move on to the second. (Special guest: Jennifer. Cameo by Lee.)”
Note: this episode had a terrible glitch about a half-hour in. It’s been corrected and we encourage you to re-download. Details below.
00:06 – when Schmoe looked over the bill for the pizza, he reported one of the toppings was “6P” which we assumed was code for something. Later on, it was explained it’s really “GP” for green peppers. (And, yes, her saying “green peckers” at 00:12 is deliberate. It’s an old joke from Mike or Hud that she probably learned from us.)
00:49 – that’s a reference to Jennifer saying “Leeno” instead of Lee or Dino, before we started recording. This led to us calling her “Jeeno”, which inevitably led to our inventing a “Zeeno” who plays straight-man and sings a lot (which is a joke on the Marx Brothers, for all you youngsters out there)
01:40 – we recorded soon after the Tigers game where Armando Galarraga pitched a 28-batter perfect game, only to have it taken away from him by a botched call by the first base umpire.
Schmoe’s sarcasm is aimed at Tiger manager Jim Lehman’s statement, seen before we started recording, that the umpire is human and we all make mistakes. Outraged by such a crappy call, we were out for blood, and all the good sportsmanship by the Tigers, pitcher Galarraga, and umpire Jim Joyce, both that night and especially the following day, was really spoiling our thirst for vengeance.
05:21 – The Abyss (1989), at IMDb
08:34 – Aquaman would be a better idea; Iron Man’s a better pop reference
10:29 – “ Buffett helps to recover oiled wildlife in Gulf“, from Buffett News, actually, despite what I said. I was confused by the blue backgrounds. Buffett World titled their entry “Buffett Helping Boat Builder in Oil Spill Relief Effort“.
11:25 – Stephen Colbert on Dawn detergent, from Tuesday, June 1
11:50 – “Buffett and others honor Michael Douglas“, from Buffett News. | Buffett Performs at Event for Michael Douglas, from Buffett World
12:48 – Catherine Zeta Jones is on Broadway in A Little Night Music, for which she won a Tony on June 13. Which seems like a good time to mention Straight Guys Who Love Showtunes.com.
13:06 – not exactly
15:02 – when I sent out an e-mail about the contest, Scott responded that he was all over it. When Mike wrote in to say he’d placed an entry, Scott wrote “Shoot ! There goes my chances!”
15:49 – Margaritaville Cargo
17:05 – “Backstage with Buffett in Houston“, from Buffett News | “What It’s Like Backstage with Buffett“, from Buffett World
18:33 – Detroiter Truck Stop
19:26 – “Margaritaville Foods Announces Additional Chicken Products“, from Buffett News | “Margaritaville Foods Introduces Frozen Chicken Chunks“, from Buffett World
21:30 – Mexican Moonshine
23:44 – “Hello Summer, Goodbye Fees“, from Live Nation
25:20 – Palacenet.com has a great PDF map which shows every seat at Pine Knob
31:27 – I also had a cold that week
27:34 – a first hand Nashville account
27:46 – Nashville flood, in pictures
32:49 – I don’t know what’s worse, that a horrendous glitch somehow occurred at this spot or that it took two weeks for me to discover and correct it. I encourage you to download the fixed version; a quick way to recognize it is it’s 51:31 long while the original, damaged file was 51:29.
39:00 – Jimmy’s second “Stay thirsty, my friend” is from the intro to “Cuban Crime of Passion”
