Episode 166: All Night Long

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, August 22 2012 (10:00 PM – 11:00 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time, Brownstown MI
“More stories from Comerica Park, an in-depth discussion of the Detroit setlist, and this year’s (brief) tailgate podcast. (Cameo by Annie [and Sarah].)

03:51track one on Pat Benatar’s Seven the Hard Way
04:12 – Mike’s off-key “Fire away” is deliberate. He’s making fun of an old and tone-deaf college room mate.
06:30 – again, my concert and tailgate photos are at Flickr
10:00 – and again, the concert and tailgate video was posted earlier
20:33 – it’s not from our concert, but here’s “CILCIA” video roll from Cincinnati
20:48 – I guess I bored Annie enough that she put her head down and took a nap
    23:15check for yourself
26:22 – not sure why I never noticed that before since this was not the first time they’d done it
    29:54Little Caesar’s (a non-paid non-commercial non-endorsement)
32:49 – my videos of both performances were posted below: Lionel’s and Jimmy’s. An official video from that night is also available at iTunes.
36:15 – oh me of little faith. The Tigers did get into the World Series this year …and got shutout in four games
36:57 – he did it three shows later, in Atlantic City (August 4 2012)
43:50 – as seen on the Margarillas Facebook page:

Me want!

    44:18Cheli’s Chili, Detroit
48:46 – using the Stream to Me app, which has been obsoleted now that iCloud is available (so they say)
54:18 – no, why would Schmoe have seen it. It was only posted on his own website two weeks ago!

Where’s the Party?

We’ve been wondering what Comerica Park has planned for Jimmy’s big stadium show this Saturday, and it looks like today’s Detroit Free Press might have answered all of Schmoe’s questions.

2012 Newspaper Ad

Here’s the ad from the Detroit Free Press Sunday edition, Entertainment section, page 5E.

The 2012 ad

Tailgating starts at 8 AM?!?!? Could there be such a thing as too much partying? Those poor parking lot attendants don’t know what they’re in for.
Update: from the concert page at the Olympia Entertainment website, here’s the website splash page ad and the webpage banner ad.

It’s Official

The rumor at Buffett World has come true.
It was announced today that Jimmy Buffett will be playing Comerica Park on Saturday, July 28. And for any naysayers who were afraid there would not be any tailgating, the promoters are promising “[a] daylong ‘Buffett’s Beach Party’ will be held on the grounds outside Comerica Park, where a lounge, margarita tastings, midway games and other frills will be in place for the legion of partying Parrothead fans.”
    Here’s the Detroit News‘s write-up. Here’s the Detroit Free Press‘s.
And this banner was on the Freep’s front page.

Front page news

Update: here’s the Free Press‘s article, in full, from page 1C.

2011 Newspaper Ad

Palacenet.com, the website for the Meadowbrook and Pine Knob (DTE Energy) amphitheaters and the Palace of Auburn Hills arena, had Buffett’s ad as the sole image for their front page. This splash page is no more, but you can still see the image here.
It took a few days, but the Detroit Free Press finally printed this year’s concert ad today, Sunday. Presumably this is our first look at the “Fin Land” logo.

BONUS: 2011 Radio Ad(s)

Having learned yesterday, via Buffett World, that WOMC 104.3 had broken the news of a July 21 Pine Knob concert, I kept my recorder tuned to WOMC this morning to attempt capturing this year’s radio commercial. I recorded four hours this morning (an hour forty-five of which was silence…grrrr) and another two hours this afternoon. WOMC broadcast the ad at 12:40 PM.

The ad is shorter than usual, only :30, and I’m not sure if this is a cost-saving measure or if there might be a :60 version out there too. There was no newspaper ad this morning in the Detroit Free Press so I’m keeping an eye out for that as well.
Update: I managed to catch the :60 version Friday, March 11, on WCSX 94.7. I recorded six hours of them this morning and, listening back to the files, encountered the ad after only fourteen minutes (having aired at around 6:20 AM, I guess). Quite the opposite of how it usually goes…
