Episode 69B: Sweaty Pits and Setlists

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, May 24 2008 (6:00 PM – 12:00 AM) at Casa de Schmoe, Dearborn MI
“A bonus podcast, recorded at Casa de Schmoe. The boys rehash the headlines, review Swine Not?, take another look at fantasy setlists, and learn something disturbing about Greg. (Background vocals by Schmoe’s & Mike’s kids and Cathy.)

Our first podcast with a teaser trailer! Catch Scott’s lame-ass RSVP as it comes in!…

>

I’m chagrined to admit this episode was delayed by several hours because I could not come up with a name! And embarrassed even more that after all that time, this was the best I could come up with. Alternate titles included “The Pit and the Porcus” (get it? an Edgar Alan Poe reference — zing! kerpow!), “Eine Schweine Nachtarmpit” (Mozart! pwned!), and “Days of Swine and Setlists” (Blake Edwards! the hits just keep on coming!). In the end, as you can see, I gave up trying, feeling it was more important to just upload the danged thing.
00:24 – Greg has obviously blocked the end of Episode 38 from his mind.
00:40 – the reason those clinks don’t sound like our usual Landshark clinks is because Schmoe had served us Frugal Margaritas in tumblers
01:07 – I know it’s hard to believe, but that comment was truly unintentional
01:19 – the occasional thumps in the left speaker are the Schmoe’s and Mike’s kids playing basketball outside
03:45 – Buffett World’s write-ups of Charlotte and Jazz Fest
    06:24Amazon’s Swine Not? listing
    07:47 – that’s what we call foreshadowing
08:49 – and that’s what they call playing along
09:59 – seeing as I’m writing these notes a month later, I can now state that Jimmy’s appearance is actually on disc 7
10:17Amazon link for Sonny Landreth’s new From the Reach album
10:30the sample of “Howlin’ Moon” on iTunes … which, although iTunes Plus, costs 99¢ (by the way) and not $1.29
10:44Wikipedia says Dr John was born in 1940
10:51Jimmy’s “Late Show Web Exclusive” performance at CBS.com
13:15Scenes You Know By Heart at Mailboat Records
15:07 – can you make out the narration by our robot overlords? If not, it goes like this: “But first a word of explanation. It was at this time the recording was paused briefly while the boys watched the three interviews. During the Regis interview, Greg caught everyone by surprise when he blurted out that he wanted to sniff Kelly Ripa’s armpit, presumably because she was still wearing a workout outfit from a previous segment. This was such an unexpected and verging on downright creepy glimpse into Greg’s personal peccadilloes that the boys of course had to make mention of it for the rest of the night. And now, back to the podcast.”
19:05 – imagine Schmoe with fists in the air. Then imagine the effect this has on Greg.
20:00the Swine Not? listing at Barnes & Noble
22:52 – “Gardening at Night” off R.E.M.’s 1982 EP Chronic Town
23:33 – and now, Listener Ed’s setlist, as originally e-mailed to us way back on February 17

27:44 – Greg’s wife Cathy showed up during our mid-show break. She first appeared in our back-to-back Episode 52 and Episode 53 podcasts (coincidentally, the night Greg mentioned back at 00:24)

Episode 69A: The Further Adventures of Amigo Schmoe and Cactus Boy

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, May 21 2008 (10:30 PM – 12:00 AM) at Joe’s Prime Time Pub, Brownstown MI
“Here comes another podcast about Roger Clyne…and Mexico! They just can’t help themselves: Mike and Schmoe went to RCPM’s Circus Mexicus in Puerto Peñasco last weekend, and are full of stories. For those of you hungry for Buffett content, they at least made a stop at the new Margaritaville Café in Glendale AZ along the way. (Special appearances by DJ and Rachel.)

A camera was present during the session, which allows us to present this little behind-the-scenes look at one of the episode’s highlights.

Since the Roger Clyne talk monopolized the episode, we’ve already recorded a more normal show which will be available in a couple days.

Episode 68: Go Set Lister Go

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, May 7 2008 (9:30 PM – 10:30 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time Pub, Brownstown MI
“For a short episode this sure took a long time to edit. Schmoe, Greg, and Mickey see out our second year and kick off our third looking back at the tour’s first leg and looking ahead at
a new project. (Special appearance by Jen.)

00:00 – This week’s cold open was stolen from the Retro Crush podcast, episode #137. Learn more at Retro Crush.com.
00:42 – ah, the old opening music, repeating our tradition of bringing back our old theme on our anniversary shows
02:04 – DRANO: “Downriver Area Narcotics Organization”
03:45 – pretty sure Jimmy meant Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Which I guess means he did.
04:13 – included since that has to be the scariest sounding fan ever!!!
06:07 – sorry, we had no windscreens

Episode 67: The Heartbreaker Kid

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, April 23 2008 (9:30 PM – 11:00 PM) at Joe’s Prime Time Pub, Brownstown MI
“We’re still here too! With the start of our new season and Jimmy’s concert tour
coinciding, we bant—  I mean, we
discuss the new setlist. (Panel includes Greg, Scott, Schmoe, Mickey, and, once again in person, Mike. Cameo appearance by DJ.)

00:12 – quite the long mid-season break, eh? Take THAT Battlestar Galactica!
00:30 – and in sports, the Tigers trounced the Texas Rangers 19 to 6 and the Pistons beat the Philadelphia 76ers 105 to 88.
00:36 – the deck had been recently stained and the smell of it was filling up the back room
    01:07Landshark Lager
02:08 – the full quote, “It’s pronounced ‘Canada’; and, no, I haven’t”, comes from a Labatt Blue commercial (YouTube link)
03:06 – in the previous episode, Schmoe went on a rant about the lack of any irony in the Alanis Morissette song “Ironic”. It was cut for time.
03:29 – Kirsten’s phone call, as mentioned in Buffett News
04:13St Louis Today article, via Buffett News
    05:05 – first mentioned in Episode 63
06:31 – score by John Williams, of course
07:44 – “Skip to the end”: a Simon Pegg quote from Spaced, available at last in the US on July 22 2008 and highly recommended
    11:07Commonwealth Displays
11:14according to Wikipedia, Radio Margaritaville started streaming in 1998 before being picked up on Sirius in 2005
12:35 – admittedly a not so subtle riff on the Monty Python “Knights of Ni” scene
13:27 – we learned later that Scott’s playout music is the Rolling Stones’ “She’s a Rainbow”. And my song is arguably Eric Clapton’s “Bell Bottom Blues” (though technically I only stepped out to go to the lavatory; I did not actually leave the bar).
No playout music for Greg, Schmoe, or Mike though, unfortunately. The jukebox had stopped playing by then.

    21:05 – as mentioned in Episode 64
    26:16my 1992 setlist page
26:25 – despite Mike contributing in person, we still get goddamned GSM noise! Scott is innocent since he had actually left by this point. I can’t say for sure, but i’m tempted to say Greg is to blame since I seem to recall him fiddling with his phone at this time.
    36:30 – as discussed in Episode 64

Episode 66: When the Song Hits Home

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, April 16 2008 (9:00 PM – 11:00 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Another season winds to a close as Greg, Mickey, Scott, Schmoe, and Mike review the Glendale AZ mini concert. And we bring back the fourcast, as Schmoe quizzes us on our favorite Jimmy Buffett performances. Share yours at podcast_at_northcoastcast.com. (Special appearance by Jennifer.)

What? Another show? Yes — partly because Mike is still in town and partly because concert season is starting to heat up, we’re getting back into our weekly shows routine.
Re: title. You’ll have to pardon the slight paraphrasing of the song lyric. It sounds better, for our purposes here.
    01:26Roy Orbison’s Black & White Night on Blu-Ray
    01:26 – in Episode 65
01:55recorded April 11 at the Gothic in Englewood CO, available from the Live Music Archive at Archive.org
04:23 – compare for yourself: Pita Jungle vs Jungle Java
04:54 – which of course means next week it will be Scott’s favorite concert ever
12:32 – the 41st Country Music Awards, hosted by Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus, were broadcast two nights prior (Monday, April 14)
    16:23 – as captured in Episode 20
    16:39 – previously mentioned in Episode 15
17:01 – this was in 1992, but Jimmy also did three shows around the Fourth in 1993
    17:57 – also discussed in Episode 63
19:07 – Mike and Schmoe are referencing the Roger Clyne lyric “The kids are lighting firecrackers, boom boom boom” from “Counterclockwise”
19:48 – this was possibly my first Jimmy Buffett concert too. I was too drunk to remember any of it, but I do have this cool tour button as a souvenir…

Check out that snazzy concert hat too!

20:44 – available on my 1993 setlist page. The story behind this: I talked my brother into bringing his wife and younger daughter to this show. They were up in the lawn, and during the show a woman was coaxed into taking her top off for the cameras. I was mortified, thinking such debauchery would scandalize my young niece. I hoped that they might not have seen it … only to find out afterward it had happened only a few feet away from them! Jimmy made mention of the incident in his song introduction.
22:49 – no, I did not get mess up the title. I simply did not pause enough between “Night” and “live”
24:47 – available on my 1995 setlist page. I’m not sure, but it might have been Tropic Depression Six which was spawned by Hurricane Erin. The story behind this: I had clumsily given myself a head injury (hitting myself in the forehead with a tire iron while changing a flat, if you must know) and it required four stitches. The doctor instructed me to make sure to keep the bandage dry — and here I was, the next day, standing in an all-day rainstorm!
27:45Amazon’s link for the Music for Montserrat DVD. (The audio clip is no longer hosted on my site, as I deleted it once the DVD went on sale.)
30:37 – available on my 1989 setlist page
30:56 – available on my 1996 setlist page
31:06 – available on my 1987 setlist page
31:17 – one which is available on my 1997 setlist page
31:27 – one which is available on my 1992 setlist page
32:05 – as you can probably guess, the pretense of calling Scott back was because our big finish was recorded prior to the podcast, when Scott was still present
    33:27Lake Michigan car ferry

Note: I keep forgetting my setlists site is so old most of the content is still in crappy-sounding (and, in most cases, no longer playable) RealAudio. I had intended on linking my fourcast list to the respective audio clips on my old LADI34T site, but I’m reminded it will be necessary to redo the clips to make them more listenable. Something new for my To-Do list. Stay tuned.

P.S.: the “banter” count for tonight’s show is 8

Episode 65: Pirates, Banditos, and Beach Bums

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, April 9 2008 (9:30 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“The boys are back from their road trip weekend (seeing Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers in Ferndale and Chicago) and they’re full of stories. Let the mancrushing begin. (Cameo by Jennifer.)

We saw Roger Clyne in Ferndale on Thursday, April 3 and in Chicago on Friday, April 4. Many of our adventures are illustrated by pictures in our photo gallery: the Ferndale album and the Chicago album.
00:00 – audio from our Roger Clyne interview, in Episode 37
01:31 – Schmoe’s and my night of stargazing is part of the bonus audio to our “Caseville 2007” entry, and has been ridiculed ever since
    02:29Joe’s Bar, Chicago
    04:45Emmett Kelly
06:06 – “Buffett Performs in Glendale AZ”, from Buffett News | “Buffett Plays Glendale Margaritaville”, from Buffett World
06:25 – “Buffett Performs at the St Barts Bucket Regattas”, from Buffett News
06:45 – “Buffett Number 1 On Top Events Lists”, from Buffett World
07:18 – “Early Review of Swine Not?”, from Buffett News
07:44 – audio from “Onion Radio News”, March 30
26:26 – funny because the original couplet is “Got off in the wrong direction / Found some hookers and lost our erections”
27:00the picture under discussion. (I cropped off all the empty space, but you can see Greg’s bunny pose.)
29:11 – or this group shot from Chicago
    32:58Georgia, the band
39:11 – I believe Scott getting a Shurman bandmember’s attention by shouting “Hey, Shurman!” was first mention in Episode 37 (or maybe its bonus episode)
40:41 – as with the previous clips, audio from Ferndale is taken from the upload at Live Music Archive at Archive.org. I left in a lot of this song to get to Greg’s out-of-tune singing on “Echo, echo, echo.”
48:07 – yes, it’s an inside joke, but the butt of it is not part of the podcast
49:45 – as seen in “Dunder Mifflin Infinity”, the second episode of The Office season four
51:14 – it may seem wimpy to use ear plugs, but those guys play loud!
    54:19 – the RAM, Chicago
57:50 – pretty sure this story is bullshit, but I agree it should catch on
65:24 – I don’t remember if this has been discussed before. Mike is referring to when Scott confused the band Scandal and the band Journey. But in Scott’s defense, it was because Scandal covered Journey’s song “Only the Young”.
73:08 – yes, that’s still me on the right; but listen for Mike on the left. (Chicago audio is from my own Zoom H2.)

Episode 64: Fun Tickets in Our Pockets

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, March 26 2008 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Between the last episode and this, it was announced that Jimmy is coming back to
Pine Knob and tickets have already gone on sale. Schmoe, Greg, Texas Mike, Hud, Mickey,
and Scott share their ticket-buying stories, with guest appearances by Jennifer and Lee.

00:19 – a topical reference to Hillary Clinton and her questionable memory on the campaign trail
00:51 – Greg’s “smelled bad” comment is in reference to the pitcher of water Jennifer just brought
01:10 – the international sign for water is reportedly holding up three fingers
02:03 – the Pistons lost to the Raptors, 89 to 82
02:20 – Houston is the site of the tour’s opening night, Monday April 21
    02:39Landshark Lager

04:16#1 Overall Live Event on TicketNews.com, via Buffett News
04:45 – Jen had a hole in her top. She was wearing a sweater top with white and navy blue horizontal stripes, and the hole was right along the bust line. She lucked out at least that the hole was right in one of the blue stripes, so it was almost hidden in the dim light of the Zodiac back room. Update: you can see the hole in this picture.
05:03the tour page at Jake Shimabukuro’s website
05:28 – “Tonsil Trouble”, South Park Episode 1, Season 12. Watch it here. Once again, this clip has been cut for time as well slightly re-ordered for clarity. One remarkable element of the clip is that they knew enough to use a modern-day Jimmy but they gave him the Live By the Bay band!

08:18 – Landshark was the drink of choice on the March 7 edition of the Diggnation podcast. Watch it here. (Thanks go to Listener Ed for dropping us a line about it.)

09:13Advertising Age‘s article on Corona, via Buffett News
09:55 – links for Miller Chill, Tecate, Dos Equis, and Bud Light with Lime
10:20 – for one poker night long long ago Mike showed up with some lime-flavored tortilla chips. It was so outlandish we never let him hear the end of it. We had no idea how ahead of his time Mike would be … but we still give him hell over it.
11:53 – introducing my new Samson H2 Zoom recorder. We switch now from the Core Sound mics and my Edirol R-09 recorder to the H2 Zoom which we could hand off between us
12:57 – according to Schmoe this came from Family Guy Episode 6, Season 1, “The Son Also Draws”. Watch it here.
14:22 – not counting TicketMaster’s additional charges, our $134.50 tickets included $3 for “traffic control”, an $8.50 “venue fee”, and $1 for Jimmy’s Singing for Change charity

Episode 63: Sharkjaws Adam at Bay

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, March 12 2008 (10:00 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“The preliminaries out of the way, we finally get down to reviewing the Live By the Bay concert video. And the wait was worth it since Mickey and Schmoe were not only joined by Mike (on phone) and Hud, but Scott and Greg managed to show up again too! (Cameo by Jennifer.)

00:03 – Mike attended a work dinner, while in Houston, which he had feared might delay his participation on the panel
00:55 – obviously MIke did not get disconnected. I can only assume the wire from the phone to our speaker had a shot
01:03 – score by John Williams and Christopher Young
03:01 – Hud remained pretty fascinated by the contents of Scott’s MacBook. (The YouTube stuff he mentions was archived, since Zodiac still doesn’t have wi-fi.)
    03:06Landshark Lager
    03:33Buffett World tour dates
04:26 – “he’s playing Jul 17th in both Texas and Ohio”, Greg wrote, after perusing vividseats.com (the first place I saw the June 10 rumor)

05:15 – tonight’s sponsor, Straight Guys Who Love Show Tunes
05:41news on Captain Tony, via Buffett News
06:15Amazon’s link to Sleepy Time Tunes Jimmy Buffett Lullabies. You’re probably not supposed to operate heavy machinery while listening to it, but the :30 samples available on iTunes might be safe enough. Having sampled the samples, I especially like how “CILCIA” is included. What better way to train your toddler to shout “Sonofabitches!” on cue. I do have to admit the album has a pleasing, easy-going feel (despite that monotonous sleigh bell); but ultimately the tracks all sound way too much like those self-loading MIDIs on your old mid-90s Geocities page.
06:56Margaritaville Salsa at Garden Fresh Gourmet
07:04 – Listener Josh wrote us on March 6
    09:40 – that’s Greg’s U of M inspired ringtone, by the way
11:20Wikipedia describes the Miami Marine Stadium as “originally built for powerboat racing and utilized a floating stage in front of the grandstand that allowed additional concertgoers to listen from their boats in the water behind the stage.”
    12:01the Barbizon modeling school
12:41 – a topical reference about some football coach who was guilty of pressing his naked self against windows, but I can’t find the news story any more
    13:22 – first heard in Episode 13
14:26 – still need to find Westwood One info
    20:24 – here’s a screen grab off my laserdisc:

“Only visiting this planet”

25:56 – now compare this to what Scott said in Episode 56
28:21 – everybody knows the Fins to the Left part, everybody knows the Fins to the Right part. This is the third step…

28:45 – the “Last Mango” chorus is written on the men’s room wall at Capt Tony’s
30:24 – you know what? Screw it. The song sounds so good, here’s an MP3 download of it. It’s straight off my ancient bootleg CD, which somebody obviously recorded off the old radio concert LP.
31:06 – in 1981, according to Wikipedia, “Sailing” won Grammys for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Arrangement; the Christopher Cross album won Album of the Year; and Cross himself won Best New Artist
33:01 – another topical reference, to the mess Detroit mayor Kuame Kilpatrick got in texting saucy messages to his chief of staff, Christine Beatty

Episode 62: My Kind of People

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, February 27 2008 (9:45 PM – 11:30 PM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Hud joins us again as we begin responding to Listener Ed’s suggestion to review Live By the Bay. We give a general overview this week and then, for our next episode (once we actually get around to watching the concert), we’ll go for the song-by-song review. Special Guests: Jennifer and some Landshark Lagers. (The Roger Clyne Podcast starts at 16:56.)

It’s the Leap Day Eve edition of our podcast — that is, if it wasn’t for the fact it took almost a week to get it edited and online.
Notice the clarity in Mike’s phone call? You’d better! It’s a major reason the editing took so long. No expense was spared to get this show to you! We bought a new recorder just ro improve Texas Mike’s audio, we splurged on expensive beers, and I even paid for some of the background music.

00:14 – I swear our opening theme music was there during the editing process. Evidently it got lost in exporting the mixdown.
00:29 – dramaturgists call this foreshadowing. Though in truth it’s a callback, since we recorded our big finish before we recorded the podcast (so Jennifer could participate).
01:27 – “Gospel From the Coast” was actually the original name of Episode 10
01:44“at the Beachcomber” news (via BuffettNews.com)

    04:11Sonny Landreth news (via BuffettNews.com)
04:56 – Conan’s remarks slightly edited for time
05:13Gently Weeps at Amazon or at iTunes
06:37 – I’m pretty sure Hud said “Bookie Schmoe”, but I still choose to hear it as “Boogie Schmoe” just for the entertaining mental image
10:00link to the Parrot Head quiz, as discussed in Episode 58
16:09 – postulated because Hud has a mustache
16:17 – this is the 80s usage of “pimping”, which is more akin to “disappoint, let down, backstab, or double-cross”
16:50 – maybe Buffett thinks Michigan fans are like cicadas
21:25link to the Garden Fresh Gourmet site
    21:33Crane’s Detroit Business article
    22:11dog food packaging?
23:03 – Listener Josh provided us with information about the restaurant, but I think we will save it for our next episode
25:59 – time for a Donate button? That organ music cost me 99¢
26:22 – and a new catchphrase is born
26:43 – the magic of editing. For the record, Mike’s phone did not die out that immediately. Nor did I get his voicemail messages that fast.

Episode 61: Acrocashyto

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, February 13 2008 (10:00 PM – 12:00 AM) at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI
“Hud stays for most of the episode, Greg communicates via e-mail, and Mike actually
shows up in person. This week’s album under review is 1994’s
Fruitcakes. And, by popular demand, we present another chapter of Hud’s Hooker Korner. (Guests: Jennifer and Jacob. Occasional yawning and fidgeting: Mike’s and Schmoe’s kids.)

This week’s show name was stolen from inspired by a parody title in an old Mad Magazine
00:03 – although the door squeak is gone, Hud compensates for it imitating the noise throughout the show
01:09 – it was my idea, in fact. It seemed funny at the time.
    03:05 – …and an angel gets its wings…
04:09 – Schmoe refers to events at the end of Episode 55
06:01 – some conversation which was cut for time creates an awkward transition here. Schmoe now begins to talk about his plans for Good Friday which, juxtaposed to the previous talk about porn, make his mention of fish tacos particularly awkward. I left this segment in anyway, just because of my conversation with Hud.

24:17 – in January 1991, four Cuban refugees in wetsuits arrived at Jimmy’s Key West dock in an 18-foot boat. Before the Coast Guard took them, Jimmy gave them a copies of Song(s) You Know By Heart to show them there was more to American music than Julio Iglesias and Gloria Estefan.

Episode 61B: Quietly Mocking Schmoe

Show Notes:
Recorded Wednesday, February 13 2008 (10:00 PM – 12:00 AM), at Zodiac Racquet Club, Southgate MI

    But wait, there’s more!
I guess having Mike in person again got us even more talkative. Not only did we record our second longest show (as of this writing) but we talked long enough to record a bonus show. Here are a few extras salvaged from the cutting room floor: Mike and Schmoe reminisce about being asked to work security for a recent concert by The Knack (they performed at Mike’s sister’s company Christmas party); and Schmoe continues our tradition of reviewing the Super Bowl halftime show.
(Show title suggested by Texas Mike. Other nominees include “Henchmen for the Night” and “With a Rebel Yell, He Mocked Schmoe, Schmoe, Schmoe”.)
